MATH MENTOR: Measuring liquid volume

For an introduction to measuring volume, go to -->>

Liquid volume is the measure of how much liquid or gas or air a container can hold. Volume is measured in cubic terms ( 3 measurement: height, depth, and width).

In the United States, liquid volume is measured using the English system as follows:

FLUID OUNCE (fl oz): the smallest liquid unit. A cup contains 8 fluid ounces of liquid.

PINT (pt): contains 2 cups of liquid, or 16 fluid ounces

QUART (qt):  contains 2 pints of liquid.

GALLON (gal):  contains 4 quarts of liquid

You try it!

Fill in the missing expressions.

EXAMPLE:
8 fl oz  = 1 cup

1 cup  = fl oz pt
  2 gal  = cups qt
24 fl oz  = qt pt
3 qt  = gal fl oz

In other parts of the world, volume is measured using the metric system.

In the metric system, liquid volume is measured in liters. People buy gasoline, milk, and other liquids by the liter.

Because we are talking about the metric system, we must think in 10's and multiples of 10!

When we measure distances in the metric system, we talk about the meter as the main unit. All other measurements relate to the meter (centimeter, kilometer, etc...). The main unit of liquid measures is the liter, so all of the other terms will repeat that ending (liter).

1 liter (l) = 1 thousand milliliters (milli means one thousandth)

The closest English measure to the liter is a quart.

1 liter = 1 hundred centimeters (centi means one hundredth)
1 liter = ten deciliters (deci means 1tenth)
1000 liters = 1 kiloliter (kilo means one thousand)

Turn  those measurements around

1 milliliter (ml) = 0.001 liter
1 centiliter (cl) = 0.01 liter
1 deciliter (dl) = 0.1 liter
1 kiloliter (kl) = 1000 liters

1 tablespoon (tbsp) = 3 teaspoons (tsp)
1/16 cup = 1 tablespoon
1/8 cup = 2 tablespoons
1/6 cup = 2 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons
1/4 cup = 4 tablespoons
1/3 cup = 5 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon
3/8 cup = 6 tablespoons
1/2 cup = 8 tablespoons
2/3 cup = 10 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons
3/4 cup = 12 tablespoons

1 cup = 48 teaspoons
1 cup = 16 tablespoons
8 fluid ounces (fl oz) = 1 cup
1 pint (pt) = 2 cups
1 quart (qt) = 2 pints
4 cups = 1 quart
1 gallon (gal) = 4 quarts
16 ounces (oz) = 1 pound (lb)
1 milliliter (ml) = 1 cubic centimeter (cc)
1 inch (in) = 2.54 centimeters (cm)

To measure large volumes of liquid, such as the amount of water on the earth, we use cubic miles or kilometers.
