English Units
Unit Description
tons a short ton that equals 2,000 pounds
pounds (lb) A unit of mass equal to 16 ounces
ounces (oz) A unit of weight equal to one sixteenth of a pound or 16 drams or 28.349 grams

Metric Units
Unit Description
tons (metric) (European spelling: tonne) A unit of weight equal to 1,000 kilograms, or 2,204.6 pounds.
kilograms (kg) One kilogram is equivalent to 1,000 grams or 2.2 pounds; the mass of a liter of water.
grams (g) A metric unit of weight equal to one thousandth of a kilogram
milligrams (mg) A unit of mass equal to one-thousandth of a gram.

When converting any unit of measurements if you want:

  • To change to a larger unit, divide.
  • To change to a smaller unit, multiply.

4.  Mr. Beady, Robin's horse, has a sore tooth. He used to weigh  750 lbs. Now he weighs 670 lbs. How much weight has he lost in kilograms?

5.  Carlos Begay just bought a used 1/2 ton pickup. How would that truck be advertised in Mexico where they use the metric system?

6.  Alicia needs 50 bales of hay to winter her horses. Each bale weighs 50 lbs. She thinks she has a great deal on bales from across the border. She needs to compare prices and be sure that the bales are the same size as what she can buy in the United States. The bales in Mexico weigh 22 kg each. Do they weigh more or less than those in the US?
