You will recognize the names of the colonies because they are now states.


What do these sentences have in common?  Are the sentences presenting similar ideas? How do these sentences present these ideas differently?

A. Complete the following sentences in one of the sentence patterns above.

1.The pilgrims came to America   they wanted religious freedom.

2. their religious disobedience, King James wanted the Pilgrims to die in the colonies.

3. Many people became indentured servants   they didn't have the money to pay for a trip to America.

4.   the American Colonies belonged to England, they were supposed to obey England.

5. The southern plantations profited from cheap labor   slavery.

B. A sentence is a complete idea that begins with a capital letter (A) and ends with a period (.).  The following paragraph has complete sentences, but the capital letters and periods are missing.  Add the capitals and periods.  Make sure the sentences are a complete idea that makes sense.

The Pilgrims had a very difficult time getting to America  they left England in September  the trip across took 65 days  during that time, they ate cold food  they got sick  one person died  others had terrible disagreements they were supposed to settle in Virginia however bad weather drove them north  they landed in Plymouth in November  the winter was cold with much snow  they had trouble building their settlement  it was too late to plant anything  they didn’t know which of the local plants were good  of the original 110 persons who landed in Plymouth, only 50 survived their first winter
