Depression Statistics

1.  In any given year, about seven percent (7%), or  about 19,600,000 people  will experience a depressive disorder.

In the statement above, 7% = about 20 million people. Approximately how many people can you estimate are in our in the total population?

Divide the part by the % to get the whole.

Answer 19,600,000/.07=280,000,000

Assume a US population or 280 million for the following statistics:

2. 19.1 million Americans 18 to 54 years-old suffer from anxiety disorders. Approximately what percent of the total population does that represent?

Answer 19,100,000/280,000,000 = 0.068 or approximately 7%

3. 35 million Americans suffer from depression severe enough to warrant treatment at some time in their lives. What percentage of the total population does that represent?

Answer 35,000,000/280,000,000 = 0.125 or 12.5 %

6. In 1997, 30,535 people committed suicide. Suicide was the 8th leading cause of death in the United States. What percentage of our present population would that represent?

Answer 30,535/280,000,000=0.00012 or 0.012%

7. Approximately 7 million women in the United States are clinically depressed. What percent of the population does that represent?

7,000,000/280,000,000=0.025 0r 2.5% Answer
