STEP INTO THE GED
Unit Project: Introduction to the Scientific Calculator

RETURN TO: Scientific Calculator  Passage

You will complete your project for this unit at the same time as you do the math practice.

Do the two sets of math problems (Set A and Set B) in the Math Practice in two ways.  Work them out yourself by hand.  Then find the answer by using your calculator.

Keep track of the time it takes you to do the problems both ways.  Use the classroom clock if it has a second hand. Or buy a cheap stop watch.

Example:

             Worked by yourself

         With the Casio Calculator

              46

            137

                2

         +   13

            198

     46 + 137 + 2 + 13 =  198

Time by hand 85 seconds  Time with the Casio: 23 seconds

When you have finished both sets of problems, make a graph of your time results for each set of problems.  Your graph might look like this ... the seconds or minutes on the left, the problem number on the bottom, and two columns to represent each way.

Set A Example

Now go to your Math Practice section and work out the two sets of problems. You will have more than 4 problems.  Look at your time records to decide what time range (left column) works for you.  In the example, the time ranges from 60 seconds to 0.  You may use minutes if you wish.

Sign and date your chart, and place it in your folder for your instructor.
