Leecy Wise, M.A, and Vicky Lara, M.A, worked as tenured colleagues at El Paso Community College for many years, sharing students enrolled in the College's English, ESL, Basic Skills, and Technology programs. Both share a passion for facilitating students on their journery toward becoming academically proficient.
Upon retirement they were approached to develop a GED prep series for people in corrections, who didn't have access to the Internet, a limitation imposed by all correctional institutions. They developed thirteen out of 30 projected units, designed to be implemented in two parts and published on CDs. When the contracting person representing two correctional systems resigned to go back to teaching, the contract was also dropped, much to our disappointment.
Rather than simply shelve the content that they developed, they have decided to offer the content it to educators as an Open Educational Resource under a CC license. The content can be accessed in two formats: (1) the online series offered on this site and (2) the self contained series of twelve units, Gear Up for Life, available in .exe format, for Windows systems only. The Gear Up for Life series, available upon request, is also licensed under Creative Commons. Both series cover the same type of content presented in different formats. of twelve units
The materials here have not been edited or implemented to date, so there will be typos and similar errors here and there. We did not take time to edit all of the content to make it uniform in all aspects. However, the order of presentation remains the same, and the intent is intact: to make it fun for adults to learn academic skills!
If you use Gear Up, we would love to hear about your experiences and those of students. Please do contact us!
